J’ai eu le plaisir d’interviewer via Skype l’acteur Patrick Fabian (dont la liste de séries dans laquelle vous l’avez vu va de Castle, au Mentalist, en passant par Grey’s Anatomy ou encore Desperate Housewives) il incarne désormais Howard Hamlin dans la série dont tout le monde parle : Better Call Saul ! Loin de l’image de l’avocat trop sérieux qui empêche Jimmy de tourner en rond, l’homme est d’une personnalité détonante qui parle avec passion de son métier. Rencontre.

MeltingMag : Commençons avec la série qui fait parler d’elle ces derniers temps : Better Call Saul ! Comment avez-vous été impliqué dans ce projet ?

Patrick Fabian : J’ai décroché le rôle de la même manière dont j’ai toujours décroché mes rôles : j’ai reçu un coup de fil de mon agent, d’un directeur de casting et j’ai eu un rendez-vous. Je m’y suis rendu dans un costume approprié et j’ai lu la scène. Et parce que la série est ce qu’elle est et que ce sont Peter Gould et Vince Gilligan aux manettes, je pensais qu’il n’y avait aucune chance pour que je sois retenu ! J’ai donc considéré ce rôle comme je considère la plupart des auditions : une opportunité de rencontrer des gens, de montrer ce que je pouvais faire avec ce qui m’était donné, et c’est tout ce que ce job demande ! Car soit vous correspondez à ce que les directeurs de casting recherchent soit pas du tout. Après des années à faire cela, c’est toujours difficile mais je suis devenu meilleur dans le fait de ne pas le prendre trop personnellement.

Dans ce cas précis, les directrices de castings étaient Sherry Thomas et Sharon Bialy que je n’avaient pas vu depuis longtemps et qui faisaient passer des auditions pour The Walking Dead. J’ai donc obtenu une audition et je pensais à ce moment là que mes chances d’être pris sur Better Call Saul étaient de zéro ! Ils pouvaient avoir n’importe qui, une star de cinéma !  Je me suis présenté à l’audition, je me suis assis et en me disant  » soit cool, fais ce que tu as a faire, ne sois pas stupide » et avant de commencer Sherry Thomas la directrice de casting a ajouté :« Vince et Peter aiment que ce soit naturel, tu vois ce que je veux dire, vraiment…réel »  » très bien je comprend » et au milieu de l’audition je me suis presque mit à chanter ! (rires). « Ok, maintenant essayons de rendre ça réel » répond Sharon. C’est là qu’on se rend compte qu’en tant qu’acteur a quel point on a besoin de directeurs de casting, de réalisateurs pour nous mettre sur la bonne voie. J’ai donc rejoué la scène plus naturellement et je me suis dis que c’était plutôt bon mais que je serai surement rappelé pour The Walking Dead. Au lieu de ça, j’ai reçu un coup de téléphone deux semaines plus tard disant que Vince Gilligan avait aimé mon audition ! Je suis ensuite revenu pour rencontrer Peter Gould et j’avais le rôle !

MM: Que pensiez-vous du personnage d’Howard Hamlin en lisant le scénario ?

PF : C’est marrant car tout le monde; plus particulièrement durant la saison 1, pensait qu Howard était un vrai connard ! Mais je n’ai jamais pensé ça et je pense qu’aucun acteur ne trouve jamais que son personnage soit mauvais, c’est une histoire de point de vue. Je pense qu’Howard est un homme bien. En fin de compte, on va en apprendre plus sur volonté, là ou se trouve sa loyauté. Mais je pense que sa loyauté est et a toujours été liée à HHM. D’ailleurs nous ne savons pas encore qui est le premier « H », s’il est vivant ou mort, on peut s’en douter étant donné qu’Howard est le seul Hamlin présent. Il a dans tous les cas beaucoup de responsabilités : Chuck s’accroche à sa « space blanket », Jimmy apporte son lot de problèmes et maintenant sa protégée la délicieuse Rhea Seehorn qui incarne Kim Wexler est sur le point de partir, la bateau prend l’eau.

« Je pense qu’Howard est un type bien »

J’aime jouer le rôle d’Howard, je pense que c’est un type bien et il n’y a pas de mal à être celui qui porte les plus beaux costumes de la série ! (rires), ça fait partie de son personnage, c’est un grand manitou, l’a toujours été. Il a quelque chose de Mitt Romney qui est très représentatif d’une élite qui aimerait se montrer proche du peuple mais qui ne sait tout simplement pas comment ! Ils parlent de faire des macaronis au fromage, ils en ont entendu parlé mais n’en n’ont tout simplement jamais mangé ! (rires)

MM : C’est vrai que nous avons tous pensé qu’Howard était le « bad guy » mais parce que nous voyons la série à travers le point de vue de Jimmy !

PF : Exactement ! Merci d’avoir dit cela car dès le 1er épisode de la saison 1, Jimmy fait référence à Howard en l’appelant « Lord Vader » ! A partir de là, chacune de mes action est faussée et l’on se dit immédiatement : « voilà encore une preuve qu’il est mauvais » ! Jusqu’à cet épisode 9 de la saison 1 ou je prend finalement la défense de Jimmy face à Chuck. C’est là que l’on se rend compte à quel point le travail d’écriture est bon. Vince et Peter était très doués pour me faire comprendre comment jouer mon personnage. Ils ne voulaient pas d’une caricature du méchant qui frise la moustache et fait les gros yeux ! Ils me disaient : « garde à l’esprit qu’Howard pense qu’il fait ce qui est bien ».

MM : Ce serait intéressant d’avoir un épisode qui se concentre plus sur le personnage d’Howard, car nous ne savons pas grand chose de lui. Pourtant, il se dévoile un peu dans l’épisode 8 de la saison 2 lors de sa conversation avec Kim !

PF : C’est une scène très courte mais il y a beaucoup de choses à venir ! Là encore, l’écriture est excellente, Kim ne quitte pas HHM pour la compétition et Howard le sait bien. Mais elle apporte un souffle nouveau à travers cet acte fou et merveilleux à la fois et c’est exactement pour cela qu’Howard l’a sortie du service courrier, il savait qu’elle avait cette intelligence et je crois qu’il aurait aimé ajouté HHMW sur le mur. Et lorsque Kim dit qu’elle ne rejoint pas la concurrence, qu’elle se lance en solo, cela ne fait que confirmer qu’Howard avait fait le bon choix. Le problème est qu’elle est trop douée et qu’à présent il la perd. C’est un peu comme trouver l’amour de sa vie professionnellement, mais pas dans les bonnes circonstances, pas au bon moment. Howard n’a aucune rancune envers Kim et il comprend que démarrer toute seule sera tout ou rien, que c’est un choix sacrément osé. Mais en même temps il ne laissera pas Kim partir avec Mesa Verde, le business c’est le business.

Mais le petit discours que tient Howard révèle beaucoup de choses sur lui ! Il est clair qu’il aurait aussi aimé monter son propre cabinet mais vivra toujours dans le regret de ne pas l’avoir fait puisqu’il est enchaîné dans cette cage dorée. Il fait de son mieux. Le fait de voir une fenêtre ouverte sur cet aspect autorise à voir de l’humanité chez Howard que nous n’avions pas vu jusqu’à présent.

Peut-être que nous en verrons plus à mesure que les choses avancent ! Ce qu’il y a de drôle dans le fait de regarder la série, c’est que l’on sait vers quoi ça tend. C’est comme regarder une tragédie Grecque ou une pièce de Shakespeare !(rires) Vous connaissez la fin mais c’est la façon d’y arriver qui est jouissive ! En tous cas, j’espère qu’Howard ne croisera pas le chemin de Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) ! Si jamais il reçoit un appel de Nacho (Michael Mando) ou Mike, je me dirais que ça sent la fin pour Howard ! (rires)

MM : Qu’est ce que vous pouvez nous révéler à propose de la saison 3 ?

PF : J’aimerais tout vous raconter à propose de la saison 3 mais je n’en ai aucune idée ! Sincèrement je sais juste qu’il y aura bien une saison 3 que j’en ferai partie mais Peter et Vince ne m’appellent pas pour me dire ce qui va se passer ! (rires)

MM : C’est encore mieux, ça sera une grande surprise !

PF : Oui car c’est quand je reçoit le script que je découvre ce qui se passe. Par exemple, la venue d’Hector ! Nous ne savions pas de qui ou de quoi il s’agissait, les auteurs avaient marqué le script de noir par endroits. On se demandait ce qui allait de passer, la NSA ? le FBI ? Mais si Howard devait avoir une scène avec Mike ou Nacho j’aimerais quand même le savoir à l’avance ! (rires)

MM : En dehors de Better Call Saul, je crois que vous faites partie d’un film intitulé Driver X, pouvez-vous nous en dire plus ?

PF : Bien sûr ! Driver X est un film indépendant, nous avons terminé le tournage et nous sommes maintenant en post-production. Nous avons lancé une campagne de financement participatif sur Kickstarter. Je suis très excité par ce projet. Le film raconte l’histoire d’un homme d’une cinquantaine d’années qui tenait un magasin de disques à Los Angeles, mais aujourd’hui l’industrie du disque n’est plus ce qu’elle était et il doit trouver un travail car plus personne ne veut d’un type de 50 ans dans le business de la musique. Se femme doit travailler aussi et ils sont dans une sorte de crise de la cinquantaine. Il décide finalement de devenir chauffeur de taxi pour Uber à Los Angeles la nuit, conduisant beaucoup de jeunes fêtards de 20 ans et il réalise vite qu’il n’appartient plus à ce monde. La façon dont les hommes et les femmes agissent, la musique qu’ils écoutent, tout ça lui font prendre conscience de qui il est, qu’il doit s’accepter et ne plus vivre dans le passé.

Au casting, il y a beaucoup de visages connus comme Tanya Clark (Banshee), Oscar Nunez (The Office), Max Gail (Barney Miller) le top model italien Nina Senicar. Le mieux est de visiter www.driverxmovie .com !

MM : Comment s’est passé le tournage de The Last Exorcism (ou Patrick Fabian interprète le rôle principal du Reverend Cotton Marcus ndlr) ?

PF : J’ai adoré ! C’était tellement drôle ! C’était à la fois effrayant et drôle à tourner et pendant deux semaines j’ai pu devenir une star de cinéma ! (rires) Nous avons voyagé jusqu’à Londres ou la première se tenait au cinéma Odeon, c’était une véritable expérience !

MM : Quels sont vos autres projets ?

PF : On m’a suggéré d’interprété un des nouveaux personnages de Marvel (il gonfle ses biceps), je n’crois pas !(rires) Mais ça serait très amusant de faire partie de ce projet ! En revanche je vient juste de tourner un épisode de Grimm ! Vous regardez cette série en France ? Cet épisode intitulé « Skin Deep » (Episode 05/15) vient d’être diffusé et j’y incarne un dermatologue qui utilise ses propres produits sur lui et les choses tournent horriblement mal !

J’ai tourné cet épisode à Portland en janvier dernier en travaillant avec Barney Burnman (qui a gagné un oscar pour Star Trek). C’était très amusant bien que ça a été très difficile pour moi de rester assis sur une chaise sans bouger pendant 4 heures ! C’était une expérience très intéressante car dès que vous portez un masque; d’une : plus personne ne veut déjeuner avec vous ! (rires) et deuxièmement vous vous rendez compte que les gens vous traitent différemment !

« Faire partie d’une série qui cartonne est un immense bénédiction »

Bien que le tournage de Better Call Saul dure 6 mois, je suis autorisé à tourner dans d’autres projets. Faire partie d’une série qui cartonne est un immense bénédiction mais ne veut pas dire que vous obtiendrez tout ce que vous voulez sans rien faire. La meilleure chose est que cela m’a ouvert des portes qui m’étaient fermées jusqu’alors. Better Call Saul est mon ticket vers des opportunités et des possibilités.

MM : Quelles sont les relations entre les membres du casting de Better Call Saul ?

PF : Comme vous pouvez l’imaginer, Bob est un enfoiré et je déteste Rhea !(rires) Non j’adore Rhea Seehorn, c’est la sœur que je n’ai jamais eu, on s’amuse beaucoup sur le tournage et nous sommes les petits nouveaux elle et moi ! Jonathan Banks, Bob Odenkirk, les auteurs et tout le reste de l’équipe viennent tous de Breaking Bad et se connaissent tous. Nous étions donc les nouveaux venus et on se pinçaient parfois l’un l’autre en se disant : « tu arrives à croire qu’on est vraiment ici? » je l’adore et Jonathan est un mentor. Ce que j’aime chez lui c’est qu’il a tout vu, il a eu des hauts et des bas dans sa carrière et la première chose qu’il m’ait dite (dans une imitation parfaite de Jonathan Banks !ndlr) :  » Patrick, ne soit jamais en retard à ton travail, jamais. Mais surtout pas sur celui ci. Ne sois pas en retard ».

Et si vous pensez que la seule personne qui pourrait avoir la grosse tête soit Bob Odenkirk, pas du tout, au lieu de ça c’est un fantastique numéro 1, il a de la classe, il est sympathique et intelligent. Et bien que les lumières soient sur lui, il aime partager ça avec les autres acteurs. Travailler avec lui et Michael McKean (Chuck) est un plaisir, j’ai beaucoup de scène avec Michael cette année. Nous nous entendons donc tous très bien et nous avons beaucoup de chance que la série soit entre les mains de Vince Gilligan et Peter Gould.

MM : Qu’est ce qui vous a donné envie d’être acteur ?

PF : J’ai vu The Man Who Would Be King de John Huston, une adaptation d’un roman de Kipling avec Sean Connery et Michael Caine et ça m’a touché en tant que jeune homme et je me suis dit que c’est ce que je voulais faire. A la fin de ma carrière, j’aimerai pouvoir avoir 3 choses dont je pourrai être fier et Better Call Saul en fera partie.

MM : Merci beaucoup Mr Patrick Fabian !

I had the pleasure to interview via Skype actor Patrick Fabian (who you certainly knows from Castle, The Metalist, Grey’s Anatomy or Desperate Housewives) but now as Howard Hamlin in the show that everyone is talking about : Better Call Saul ! Far from the image of the too serious attorney, Jimmy’s spoilsport, the man is a cheerful personality and talk about his job with passion !

MeltingMag : Let’s start with the show that everyone is talking about : Better Call Saul ! So how did you get involved in this project ?

Patrick Fabian : I got the job like a always got the job, i got a call from my agent, a casting director and an appointment. So I went and i dressed appropriately and I read the scene. And because of the show that it was and because it’s from Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan, i thought…there’s no way they gonna pick me ! So i looked as this job like i look most audition : as an opportunity to meet somebody, show to the casting director that you can do the material and at that point that’s all that your job is ! Because you either answer to the question they have about the character they want or you’re not. After years of doing this, it’s still hard, but i got better at not making it too personal.

In this case, the casting directors were Sharon Bialy and Sherry Thomas, and i have not seen these ladies in a long time. They’ve been casting for The Walking Dead, and so i got the audition and i thought that my chances of getting Better Call Saul : zero ! They can have anybody, they can pick some movie star ! But i haven’t seen Sherry &  Sharon but maybe I’ll get call back and I can get a few episodes on The Walking Dead ! So when i went in, i just sat down and did my thing, and after doing this for 25 years,  i tried to mentally just think :« be cool, just do your thing, don’t be stupid  » and just before we did it, Sherry Thomas the cast director said : » Vince and Peter like it very natural, you know, real…real » and I said « ok ok i got it ! » and in the middle of the audition I goes like that (singing), and she said  » ok, well we have that, now let’s try make it real this time !  » and it was a great reminder of, even after doing this again and again, you need a director, you need a casting director. So then i just did my thing and that was that. I thought that was good and maybe i’ll got back for The Walking Dead ! But instead, about two weeks later, I got a call back and said « Vince and Peter seen the tape and they liked it ! » « wow » and I went back and I met him, Peter Gould test it and it was it !

So after thirty years of auditionning , this was basically two times and I got the job of my life that we can call it right now.

MM : What did you think when you read the script ? What did you think about Howard Hamlin ?

PF : Everybody; especially in season 1, thought Howard was a dick, and i never thought that, i don’t think any actor ever thinks that their character is bad, it’s all about your point of view. I think Howard is a good guy, ultimately, we’ll finding out more what kind of spine he has, where does his loyalty lies. But i think his loyalty always lied to HHM. So we don’t know who is the 1st « H » is yet, where he’s living or dead, we can make an assumption because Howard is the only Hamlin seen. But he’s in charge of a big deal and as you can see in the show, Chuck is in his space blanket, Jimmy sort of a screw up and now my protege Rhea Seehorn who deliciously plays Kim Wexler is now almost at the door, the ship is now in bad water, i got lot of responsabilities. I like playing Howard, i think Howard is a good guy, there’s nothing wrong to be the guy with the best suit on the show, which is a part of his character, he’s top dog, he’s always been top dog and i also think he’s like Mitt Romney who is very much representative of the elite class who wants to have a touch with the common men but, God bless him, just doesn’t know, so they talk about having macaroni and cheese, they know of it, but they really havent had it.

MM : It’s true, we all thought Howard was the bad guy because we see the show and the character through Jimmy’s eyes !

PF : Exactly ! Thank you for saying that because right in the very 1st episode, Jimmy refers to me as « Lord Vader », so since we’re watching a show called « Better Call Saul » and we’re all sort of already with Saul’s point of view, from that point every action that i do is distorted, so anybody watching what i do is immediately thinking « oh there’s more evidence that he’s bad ! » and we get the episode 9 from season 1 where it turns out i was sort of protecting Jimmy from Chuck ! That’s where the writing is really good. Vince and Peter were really good about it, when i was working on my character while we were doing our episodes, what you don’t want to do is play the vilain like the « twisting of the moustache », that sort of things, and they were very good about saying we don’t need to do that, « keep in mind that Howard is doing what Howard thinks he should do. »

MM : It would be great to have a more specific episode on Howard, because we don’t know much about him and he were very touched by his conversation with Kim on episode 08 where he said he wanted to start his own business but his dad took him out of it !

PF : That’s a very short scene but there’s a lot going on ! Again great writing, she’s not leaving me for the competition, Howard does know ! She does this completely with some fresh air, a crazy wonderful thing and i think that’s exactly the reason Howard choosed her out of the mail room opposed to Jimmy because he knew that she has that smart, i think he wanted to have HHMW on the wall. And by saying « no i’m not going to the competition, i’m gonna start on my own only confirms that i made the right decision. The the problem is that she’s too good so now i loose her. It’s like finding the love of your life, professionnaly, in the wrong circumstances, bad timing. So Howard doesn’t have any anger professionnally because he understand by going out on her own, it’s gonna be sink or swim, that’s a very very ballsy move to make but even in that moment we are talking, i already know i’m not gonna let her get Mesa Verde, that’s just business. And as soon as the door closed you can hear it.

But what they gave me is a very short speech that reveals a lot ! Clearly i wanted to do something as well or at least i thought i might want to do something but i would live with that regret always because i would never know, i’m tight by golden handcuff and my guilted cage and i’m making the best of it. But the fact that you see a window on it, allows me humanity that we haven’t seen before.

And maybe we’ll see more as things continue, i always say down, but i don’t know if it continues down but things are becoming less stable. That’s part of the fun watching at it because you know where it goes ! It’s like watching a greek tragedy or a shakespeare play ! You know the end, but how you get there is delicious ! Hope we’ll probably get more aout Hamlin and what that is. As somebody said you better hope you’ll never meet Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) ! If i look at the call and i see Nacho (Michael Mando)  or Mike, i ’ll be like « guys there’s something you want to tell me ? »

MM : Can you tease us something about season 3 ?

PF : I would love to tell you all about season 3 but i have no idea ! Honestly I just know i was picked up for season 3 but we got the announcement few weeks ago we were all very excited about it ! But Peter and Vince don’t call me to tell me what’s going on ! (laughs)

MM : That’s even better so you get all the surprise !

PF : Yes because when i get the script that’s what i found out ! Like when Hector showed up in the script, we didn’t know who that was, the writers would puon some part pf the script ! So i was thinking what are we doing here ? curing cancer ? The NSA ? The FBI ? But not knowing was actually better cause it’s part of the fun for everybody. But if Howard is going to have a scene with Nacho or Mike i would like to know in advance !(laughs)

MM : There’s a movie coming on called Driver X, can you tell us more about it ?

PF : Oh yeah ! Driver X is an independant film, we’ve wrapped it but we’re in post-production, so right now we’re doing a kickstarter campaign, one week to go. It looks great, i’m very excited about it. It’s about a middle aged guy in Los Angeles, he used to own a record store but at the wrong time of history, he’s now seeking a job because nobody wants a 50 year old in the music business. He’s in a sort of a middle life crisis so he started to drive for Uber at night in LA which is of course getting weirder and weirder and he realize that it’s no longer his world, because he drives people in their 20’s and the way women acts, the way men acts, and the music they listen to, all of that suddenly brings him to the fact that he has to accept where is he are and what it is opposed to living in the past. And it brings a lot of famous faces from the television even internatiolany (italian model Nina Senicar), Oscar Nunez from The Office, Max Gail from Barney Miller,  Tanya Clark from Banshee ! MM : How was shooting the horror film The Last Exorcism ?

PF : I loved doing this so much, it was so much fun ! It was spooky to do, it was fun to do, and for like two weeks i got to be a movie star (laughs) ! We got to flew to London and do the premiere at The Odeon and it was really an experience !

MM : What are your projects ?

PF : Someone suggested that i should be this new character on a Marvel thing ! And i was like (blowing his biceps) i don’t think so ! (laughs) But that would be fun to be a part of ! But i just did an episode of Grimm ! Do you guys get Grimm over in France ? The episode was called Skin Deep and i play a dermatologist who’s using his own products and things goes horribly bad !

I shot it in Portland in January and i get to work with prosthetic make up artist Barney Burnman …(who won an Oscar for Star Trek). It was really fun to do although i was in a make up chair for like 4 hours which was very hard for me. But it was a fun experience because once you put a mask on, first : nobody wants to have lunch with you ! (laughs) but walking on the set and and can see people treat you differently !

But shooting Better Call Saul last 6 month a year and i’m allowed to do other things ! Being on a hit show is a giant blessing but doesn’t mean i’ll get everything i want just like that, but the best thing about it is that it opens new doors for me to go auditioning that were not open to me before. Because there is a certain level of things that you can get in, it’s my ticket for an opportunity to a possibility.

MM : How was the chemistry between the character on BCS ?

PF : As you can imagine, Bob is an asshole, i hate Rhea (laughs) ! No i love Rhea Seehorn, she’s the sister i never had, we have a great time on set together and also her and i were the newbies on the show. Because Jonathan Banks, Bob Odenkirk and the rest of the writers and the crew are all from Breaking Bad, so we were really the new kids on the block, basically walking on set and pinching one another thinking « do you fucking believe that we’re here ?! » I love her and Jonathan Banks is a mentor, what i love about him is that he has been to the mountain, he has been down, he’ve see it all and one of the 1st thing he said to me (with a perfect imitation !) : « Patrick don’t be late to your job ever. But to this one in particular. Don’t be late ».

And if you think that anybody could get a big head would be Bob Odenkirk, and instead he’s a great number one, is gracious, he’s nice, he’s intelligent. Everything that come to his way, he loves to share the benefits to the cast members. Working with him and Michael McKean, I love Michael McKean and i have a lot of scene with him this year.

We all get along and we’re lucky the show are in the hands of Peter and Vince.

MM : What made you want to be an actor ?

PF : I saw The Man Who Would be King a John Huston movie based on Robert Kipling story starring Sean Connery and Michael Caine and it hit me as a young man and i thought i want to do that and at the end of my carreer i would like to have 3 things that i could say that’s good and i’m really proud of that and i think Better Call Saul will be part of it.

MM : Thank you very much Mr Patrick Fabian !
